Sanders Clyde Appreciates our School Counselor!

February 3-7 is National School Counselor Week and we are recognizing our amazing counselor, Ms. Singleton.

1. What inspired you to become a school counselor? What do you love most about your role in a school?

o   I initially began my career in education as a classroom teacher. I was a first grade teacher and I vividly remember our then school counselors visiting my classroom to teach their guidance lessons and offer activities for my scholars. I absolutely LOVED our school counselors, Mrs. Williams and Ms. Farmer and I was always so intrigued and interested by their lessons. I was even encouraged to participate at times. I often felt like their lessons/topics would easily integrate into my classroom discussions. I loved teaching academic content, science and phonics were my favorite content to teach, but I felt like teaching my scholars how to have good morals and character, regulating their strong emotions, how to positively socially interact and resolve conflict with each other were the highlights of my day. Yes content area is vital but so is having good character. They were so supportive of me during my matriculation at The Citadel to become a school counselor from the beginning to the end!

2. How do you support students in achieving their academic, personal, and college/career goals?

o   The scholars at Sanders Clyde are my main priority and I strive to serve each child to the best of my ability. I help students achieve their academic, personal and college/career goals by first helping them to see that they have the potential to do whatever they desire to do. From small groups, individual sessions, planning various events such as a school-wide career day to bring exposure to a world of career options, I always make sure that I’m working for the best interest of each child. My main focus is on providing support for the WHOLE child.

3. What encouragement do you want to offer students and families to help them succeed?

o   I want my scholars and their families to know that they were born for a purpose and the possibilities of their lives are endless! There’s no limit to what they can do.
